India's Urban Wetlands: Challenges & Need for Urgent Action
Urban wetlands are natural or constructed wetland ecosystems found within cities or urban areas. They provide essential ecological services like flood control, water filtration, and habitat for wildlife, while also offering recreational and aesthetic benefits to urban populations.
Challenges Facing Urban Wetlands
- Encroachment and Land Use Change: Rapid urbanization leads to the conversion of wetlands into residential, commercial, and industrial areas. Unplanned development often encroaches upon these areas, reducing their size and ecological functionality.
- Pollution: Industrial effluents, sewage discharge, and solid waste dumping severely degrade water quality. Pesticides and fertilizers from agricultural runoff add to the contamination.
