Russia-North Korea Pact
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin’s visit to North Korea on 18–19 June, 2024, culminated in a landmark pact for “immediate military assistance if either faces armed aggression.”
Provisions of the Pact
- Military Support: The agreement covers cooperation on various issues, including mutual military support and unspecified technological assistance.
- Mutual Defence Clause: Article 4 of the agreement states that if either nation faces armed aggression, the other will provide immediate military assistance, reflecting the 1961 agreement.
- Technological Assistance: North Korea's current nuclear capabilities are limited by a lack of advanced missile guidance systems, warhead design, and re-entry vehicle technology, which Russia could help develop.
