Sundarbans SAIME Model Wins FAO Global Recognition

On 15th October 2025, a model of Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems (SAIME) in West Bengal’s Sundarbans was conferred Global Technical Recognition by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

What is SAIME Model?

It is a multi-stakeholder partnership (MSP) designed to strengthen sustainable, climate-resilient aquaculture practices while conserving mangrove ecosystems.

  • Developed by: Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS).
  • Objective: Blend livelihood enhancement with mangrove conservation through eco-sensitive aquaculture.
  • Geographical Focus: Indian Sundarbans — North 24 Parganas (Chaital) and South 24 Parganas (Madhabpur) districts.
