- Mahmud of Ghazni occupied Punjab and made repeated incursions into Ganga-Yamuna doab for its fabulous wealth, vast quantities of which (in the form of cash, jewellery, and golden images) had been deposited in temples.
- Post his death, Muhammad Ghori succeeded him, and his military objective was to gain control over Punjab and Sind.
- Post securing northwest frontier (Peshawar, Lahore and Multan), Muhammad Ghori pressed for his conquests further into India.
- Muhammad Ghori attacked Chauhans (ruled from Ajmer to Delhi) and fought the battle of Terrains (1191, 1192) with Prithviraj Chauhan.
