Lancet Report on Prevalence of Child Marriages in India
Recently, Lancet Global Health published a report on child marriages in India.
Key Findings
Decline in Child Marriages
- Child marriage declined during 1993 to 2021. The all-India prevalence of child marriage in girls declined from 494% (95% CI 481–508) in 1993 to 223% (219–227) in 2021. Child marriage in boys declined from 71% (69–308) in 2006 to 22% (18–27) in 2021.
Trends in States/UTs
- All states, except Manipur, experienced a decline in the prevalence of girl child marriage between 1993 and 2021.
