High-Energy Particle “Amaterasu”
- One of the most powerful cosmic rays ever recorded, named Amaterasu after the Japanese Sun goddess, has baffled scientists due to its unprecedented energy level exceeding 240 exa-electron volts, millions of times more potent than particles produced by the Large Hadron Collider.
- Detected during a routine data check at the Telescope Array Project in Utah on May 27, 2021, the ultra-high-energy particle arrived from a void in space where few galaxies exist, challenging scientists to explain its enigmatic origin.
