LIGO-India: An Advanced Gravitational-Wave Detector
On 6th April, 2023, the Union Cabinet approved the ‘Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory –India’ (LIGO-India) project. Under the project, an advanced gravitational-wave detector will be built in Hingoli district in Maharashtra.
What is LIGO?
- Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) refers to a highly sensitive scientific instrument that is designed to detect the tiny ripples or distortions in space-time known as gravitational waves.
- These ripples are caused by the collision of very massive objects such as black holes or neutron stars, and can provide important insights into the nature of the universe.
