Liquified Natural Gas
- The European Union is weaning itself off piped Russian gas by rapidly expanding imports of liquified natural gas (LNG), much of it fracked in the US.
- LNG is natural gas reduced to a liquid state (liquefaction) through intense cooling to around -161 degrees Celsius.
- LNG is 600 times smaller than the original volume and is half the weight of water.
- LNG is odourless, colourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive.
- The liquefaction process involves removal of certain components, such as dust, acid gases, helium, water, and heavy hydrocarbons.
