Supreme Court Expands Ambit of Article 19
Recently, a Constitution bench of the Supreme Court (SC) ruled that the fundamental rights in Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution are enforceable even against other persons, and not just the state and its instruments.
About the Judgment
- By ruling that a citizen can seek enforcement of the fundamental rights to freedom of speech not just against the State, the court has effectively extended the ground for seeking these rights against other citizens.
