Preserving peatlands is a crucial yet often overlooked strategy in the fight against global warming. This unique wetland ecosystems act as massive carbon sinks, storing more carbon than all the world’s forests combined. However, failing to address the escalating risks they face could jeopardize critical climate targets and hasten the decline of biodiversity.
A groundbreaking study published in the Journal Conservation Letters on February 12, 2025 exposes a critical conservation gap: only 17% of the world's peatlands are protected. Boreal peatlands fare even worse, with a mere 11% safeguarded, starkly lagging behind the 27% protection rate for temperate and tropical peatlands.
