India’s First Avalanche Monitoring Radar
Recently, the Indian Army and the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment (DGRE) jointly installed the Avalanche Monitoring Radar, first of its kind in India, at an altitude of 15,000 feet in north Sikkim.
- An avalanche refers to a very large amount of snow that slides quickly down the side of a mountain.

- Besides being used for detection of avalanches, this radar can also be employed to detect landslides.
