Atmospheric Stability And Instability
As air ascending or descending vertically it cools or heats. These changes in temperature with changes in altitude are called adiabatic processes and they determine the state of the atmosphere, or the stability or instability of the atmosphere.
Categories of Atmosphere
There are three basic categories in which the atmosphere or a layer in the atmosphere can be classified in terms of stability. These categories are stable, neutral, and unstable:
