The understanding of human population i.e. our numbers, distribution, growth and characteristics provides the basic background for comprehending several aspects of our environment.
- Humans are producers and consumers of earth’s resources, thus, it is important to know number of people residing in the country, where do they live, etc.
- India overtook China as the world’s most populous country, according to the UNFPA’s State of the World Population Report in 2023. This was a result of 11.1 million deaths and 9 million births in China, marking the second year in which China’s total population has been reduced.
