The Indian Councils Act of 1861
Central Government
- The Indian Councils Act of 1861 increased the number of members in the Governor-General's Executive Council from 4 to 5.
- The Act of 1861 enlarged the Governor General's council (from 6 to 12 members), which called as the Imperial Legislative Council. In this council Indians could also he associated for making laws.
- The approval of the Governor-General was required for the bill passed by the legislature to become an act.
Provincial Government
- The provincial governments had significant autonomy until 1833, when their power to enact laws was revoked.
