Copper Plate Inscriptions found at Srisailam Temple

The Bhramarambha Mallikarjuna Devasthanam, engaged in reviving ancient Ganta Matham near Srisailam temple complex, discovered six sets of copperplate inscriptions.

18 copper leaves were also found. Out of the six sets, four have inscriptions in Sanskrit and Nandi-Nāgarī script and the other two plates are in Telugu script.

About Srisailam Temple

  • It is also known as Mallikarjuna Temple and is dedicated to Shiva. It is located at Srisailam in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.
  • The temple is built on the top of the Nallamala hills situated on the banks of River Krishna.
  • There are two separate temple complexes present inside - one is dedicated to Lord Mallikarjuna and the other one to Goddess Bhramarambha.
  • The Linga of the presiding deity Lord Mallikarjuna Swamy is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
  • The deity Goddess Bhramarambha Devi is one of the eighteen Mahashaktis or the Shakthi Peethas in India.

About Nandi-Nagari Script

  • Nandi-Nagari is a Brahmic script derived from Nāgarī script which appeared in the 7th century AD.
  • This script and its variants were used in the central Deccan region and south India, and an abundance of Sanskrit manuscripts in Nandinagari have been discovered but remain un-transliterated.
  • It is a sister script to Devanāgarī, which is common in other parts of India.
