Ease of Doing Business Report

The report is published by World Bank and provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement across 190 economies

  • The Doing Business Report ranks countries on the basis of Distance to Frontier (DTF), a score that shows the gap of an economy to the global best practice.
  • The report ranks states on 10 parameters that affects a business throughout its life cycle:
    1. Starting a business
    2. Getting electricity
    3. Dealing with construction permits
    4. Registering property
    5. Protecting investors
    6. Access to credit
    7. Trading across borders
    8. Paying taxes
    9. Enforcing contracts
    10. Resolving insolvency
  • India has made significant improvements in its ranking by jumping 14 points to 63 rank among 190 countries (in 2019 report) with major improvements related to “Construction Permits” and “Trading across borders”.
  • However, the World Bank discontinued the practice of issuing Doing Business report following an investigation prompted by internal reports of “data irregularities” in its 2018 and 2020 editions (released in 2017 and 2019, respectively) and possible “ethical matters” involving bank staff.
