Garima Greh Scheme

This scheme has been launched by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. It is a pilot project scheme and similar schemes will be extended to other parts of the country after its successful completion.

Objectives

  • To provide shelter with basic amenities such as food, clothing, recreation, medical facilities and counseling.
  • To safeguard the rights of Transgender persons.
  • To provide congenial atmosphere in the Garima Greh by adopting uniform rules and regulations
  • To empower transgender persons through skill-development and skill up-gradation programmes, and protect them from atrocities and social stigma
  • To provide skill training to connect the community members with livelihood opportunities.

Criticism and Suggestion

  • It is discriminatory as it only extends to the transgender community. Transgender persons are only a fraction of the entire LGBTQIA+ Community.
  • Benefits under the scheme should be extended to the entire LGBTQIA+ Community and must not be confined only to transgender persons.
