Global Biodiversity Outlook Report – 5

It is the final report card on the progress made by countries in achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets under the Convention on Biodiversity.

  • According to the report, none of the 20 ‘Aichi Biodiversity Targets’ agreed on by national governments under the CBD have been met.

Only six targets have been partially achieved-

  1. Aichi Biodiversity Target 9 (Invasive alien species and pathways to be identified and prioritized, priority species are controlled or eradicated)
  2. Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 (17 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas and 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, to be effectively and equitably managed)
  3. Aichi Biodiversity Target 16 (Access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization)
  4. Aichi Biodiversity Target 17 (Creation, adoption and implementation of an effective, participatory and updated national biodiversity strategy and action plan)
  5. Aichi Biodiversity Target 19 (Improvement and dissemination of knowledge, the science base and technologies relating to biodiversity).
  6. Aichi Biodiversity Target 20 (Mobilization of financial resources for effectively implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020)

Status on National Targets

  • On an average more than one-third of all national targets are on track to be met (34%).
  • For another half of the national targets (51%), progress is being made but not at a rate that will allow the targets to be met. Thus, the report finds that there have been gaps in the commitments of countries to address the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
