Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2021

According to Global MPI 2021, released recently by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI), India’s rank is 66 out of 109 countries.

The Index Uses Three Dimensions and Ten Indicators:

  • Education: Years of schooling and child enrollment
  • Health: Child mortality and nutrition
  • Standard of Living: Electricity, flooring, drinking water, sanitation, cooking fuel and assets

Major Findings related to India

  • India has 381 million people living in multidimensional poverty
  • Five out of six multi-dimensionally poor people are from lower tribes and castes.
  • 65 million of the 129 million people of Scheduled Tribes are multidimensionally poor.
  • 94 million of 283 million people of Scheduled Castes are multidimensionally poor.
  • 160 million of 588 million people of Other Backward Class are multidimensionally poverty.
  • 162 million people live in female-headed households.
