India decided to fund the GMCP, the largest-ever infrastructure project in Maldives.
The project is the result of bilateral deliberation between India and the Maldives and has been under discussion since the visit of India’s External Affairs Minister to Male in 2019.
About GMCP
The project consists of a 6.74 km-long bridge and causeway link between Male and the nearby islands of Villingli, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.
The project is funded by an Indian grant of $100 million and a Line of Credit (LOC) of $400 million.
It will be the biggest ever project India has undertaken in the Maldives.
Significance
It will provide a significant boost to connectivity between the four islands of Maldives that account for about half of the Maldivian population.
It reinforces India’s role as a robust development partner of the Maldives in addition to being the First Responder in times of any emergency.
