India completes its tenure as Chair of the Governing Body of ILO

On 24th June, 2021, India completed its tenure as Chair of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation after holding the position for the period October 2020-June 2021.

  • India had assumed the chairmanship of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation after a gap of 35 years.
  • India in its last meeting recommended the member countries to adopt labour standards of ILO in respect of work from home options keeping in view the emerging pandemic.

Governing Body of ILO

  • The Governing Body is the executive body of the International Labour Organization (the Office is the secretariat of the Organization). It meets three times a year, in March, June and November.
  • It takes decisions on ILO policy, decides the agenda of the International Labour Conference, adopts the draft program and Budget of the Organization for submission to the Conference, and elects the Director-General.

About ILO

  • Established as an agency for the League of Nations following World War I.
  • Established by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.
  • It became the first specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) in the year 1946.
