Integrated Flood Warning System in Mumbai

Flood warning system for Mumbai known as “IFLOWS-Mumbai” was launched on June 12, 2020.

  • Developed By: It has been developed by Ministry of Earth Sciences in collaboration with Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai.
  • Need: Mumbai has been experiencing floods with increased periodicity. A recent flood of 29th August 2017, brought the city to a standstill. The flood of 26th July 2005 was another extreme event when the city received a rainfall of 94cm, paralyzing the city completely. Hence there was need of an early warning system for flooding, especially during high rainfall events and cyclones to enhance the resilience of Mumbai.

Features

It comprises of seven modules, namely Data Assimilation, Flood, Inundation, Vulnerability, Risk, Dissemination and Decision Support System.

  • It is an advanced warning system that incorporates weather models from National Centre for medium Range Weather Forecasting, India Meteorological Department (IMD), field data from the rain gauge network stations setup by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, thematic layers on land use, infrastructure etc.
  • Hydrologic models are used to transform rainfall into runoff and provide inflow inputs into the river systems.
  • It also uses hydrodynamic models and storm surge model to calculate the tide and storm surge impacts on the city.
