Nataraja Statue

In September 2021, USA repatriated as many as 157 artefacts and antiquities to India. The list consists of a diverse set of items from a bas-relief panel of Revanta in sandstone (made in the 10th century), bronze Nataraja figure from the 12th century, 56 terracotta, an 18th-century sword with the inscription mentioning Guru Hargobind Singh in Persian.

About Nataraja Statue

  • Nataraja means ‘Lord of the Dance’. The statue captures Shiva performing the Tandava, a dance believed to be the source of the cycle of creation, preservation and destruction.
  • It is an important piece of Chola sculpture.
