The Department of Science and Technology released ‘The Report on Climate Vulnerability Assessment for Adaptation Planning in India Using a Common Framework’.
The report identifies most vulnerable states and districts in India with respect to current climate risk and key drivers of vulnerability.
Indicators Used
Indicators for the assessment include percentage of population living below the poverty line, income share from natural resources, proportion of marginal and small landholdings, women’s participation in the workforce, density of healthcare workers etc.
Vulnerability Status
Relatively Highly Vulnerable States: Jharkhand, Mizoram, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, and West Bengal.
Relatively Low Vulnerable States: Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Sikkim, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Nagaland, Goa, and Maharashtra
Significance of the Report
It identifies the most vulnerable states and districts along with the vulnerability drivers, which is an essential first step for prioritising investment in climate adaptation.
It will aid the implementation of State Action Plans on Climate Change and their revision.
Through better designs of climate change adaptation projects, it will benefit climate-vulnerable communities across India.
