National Medical Commission

The National Medical Commission (NMC) was constituted by National Medical Commission Act, 2019. It is a regulatory body of which regulates medical education and medical professionals in India. It replaced the Medical Council of India on 25 September 2020.

Membership

The Commission consists of 33 members-

  • Chairperson (medical professionals only)
  • 10 ex officio Members
  • 22 part time members

Of these at least 60% of the members must be medical practitioners.

Functions

The functions of National Medical Commission include the following-

  • Lays down policies for maintaining a high quality and high standards in medical education and for regulating medical institutions, medical researches and medical professionals.
  • Lays down policies and codes to ensure observance of professional ethics in medical profession and to promote ethical conduct during the provision of care by medical practitioners.
  • Assesses the requirements in healthcare, including human resources for health and healthcare infrastructure
  • Promotes, co-ordinates and frames guidelines for proper functioning of the Autonomous Boards and the State Medical Councils.
  • Frame guidelines for determination of fees and all other charges in respect of 50% of seats in private medical institutions and deemed to be universities.
  • Supervises the four autonomous boards set up under the NMC Act. These boards include Under-Graduate Medical Education Board, Post-Graduate Medical Education Board, Medical Assessment and Rating Board and the Ethics and Medical Registration Board.
