National Urban Transport Policy (2006)

It envisages-

  • safe, affordable, quick, comfortable, reliable and sustainable urban transport systems,
  • establishment of quality focused multi-modal public transport systems that are well integrated,
  • providing seamless travel across modes,
  • land use transport integration,
  • introducing intelligent transport systems for traffic management etc.
  • It talks of integrating urban land use and transport planning.
  • It recommends prioritising the use of public transport, BRTS system of Colombia and Electric trolley vehicles of San Francisco as future alternatives to decongest roads etc.
  • The problems with the policy have been the perception of people towards public transport and poor planning capacity at the local level.
  • New Metro Policy, National Transit Oriented Development Policy all are aligned with National Urban Transport Policy.
