The first serious study on changing the organisational structure as well as the ethos of the Railways was carried out by the Prakash Tandon Committee in 1994.
The recommendations of the Committee include introduction of modern financial information systems, developing of business centric approach with focus on the customer, improving the investment planning system, human resource development and organisational restructuring.
The Committee’s report, conceptual in nature, suggested setting up of various task forces to consider the implementation of various recommendations. Keeping in view this suggestion, Ministry of Railways have set up various task forces as under:
