SACRED – Senior Able Citizens for Re-Employment in Dignity

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is developing a portal known as SACRED. It stands for Senior Able Citizens for Re-Employment in Dignity.

  • It is an IT portal to be developed to bring job seeking senior citizens and employment providers on one platform for ensuring that the Senior Citizens live a healthy, happy, empowered, dignified and self-reliant life. It will be developed with the help of National informatics Centre (NIC).
  • Voluntary Organizations will help the senior citizens in applying for the jobs without the payment of any user charge.

Need for Such Initiative

  • Steady Rise in Senior Citizens: There has been a steady rise in the population of senior citizens in India. The number of elderly increased from 7.6 crore in 2001 to 10.38 crore in 2011. It is projected to increase to 16.28 crore in 2026 and 19.34 crore in 2031.
  • More Active Senior Citizens: As per the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI) report 2020, more than 50% senior citizens are found active.
