Srinagar joins UNESCO Network of Creative Cities

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Srinagar as a part of its Creative Cities Network on 9th November, 2021 under the category of Crafts and Folk Art.

  • After Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi and Jaipur, Srinagar is the sixth Indian city to achieve this distinction.
  • With this, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir has entered the club of 295 creative cities network across the world.

Significance

The city will be able to represent its handicrafts on the global stage through UNESCO. It will also develop partnerships involving the public and private sectors as well as civil society in order to strengthen the creation, production, distribution and dissemination of cultural activities, goods and services.

  • This was created in 2004 to promote cooperation with and among cities that have identified creativity as a strategic factor for sustainable urban development.
  • It covers seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Arts, Media Arts, Film, Design, Gastronomy, Literature and Music.
