Terms and Terminology

  • Cloud: the infrastructure that allows users to deploy and run code remotely on machines that are accessed and available over a network, including the internet.
  • Genome Sequencing: Deciphering the exact order of bases pairs (complete DNA sequence) in an organism's genome.
  • Patent: It is an intellectual property right, a public title of industrial property that gives its owner the exclusive right to use his/her invention in the technical field for a limited number of years.
  • Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs): It refers to the general term for the assignment of property rights through patents, copyrights and trademarks. These property rights allow the holder to exercise a monopoly on the use of the item for a set period.
  • Quantum Computing: It is an area of computing focused on developing computer technology based on the principles of quantum theory (which explains the behavior of energy and material on the atomic and subatomic levels). It uses quantum bits or qubits. It harnesses the unique ability of subatomic particles that allows them to exist in more than one state (i.e., a 1 and a 0 at the same time).
  • 3D Printing: Also known as additive manufacturing, it is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital file.
  • Attributable Burden: It is the share of the burden of a disease that can be estimated to occur due to exposure to a particular risk factor.
