Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)

FSSAI is an autonomous statutory body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoH&FW). FSSAI was established in August, 2011 under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 with the aim to protect and promote public-health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.

  • FSSAI has its headquarters in New Delhi and has six regional offices located in Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Cochin.

The mandates of FSSAI includes-

  • Framing of regulations to lay down guidelines and enforce various standards related to preservation of food products.
  • Lay down guidelines for accreditation of certification bodies and laboratories engaged in certification of food safety management system for food businesses.
  • To provide scientific advice and technical support to Central and State Governments in matters of framing policies related to food safety and nutrition.
  • Collect and collate data regarding food consumption, incidence and prevalence of biological risk, contaminants in food, residues of various contaminants in food products, identification of emerging risks and introduction of rapid alert system.
