National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED)

NAFED was setup on 2nd October, 1958 with the objective to promote co-operative marketing of agricultural produce among farmers. NAFED was registered under the Multi State Cooperative Societies Act. It is headquartered in New Delhi and has four regional offices at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

The mandates of NAFED include

  • To undertake grading, packing, standardization, scientific treatment and processing of agricultural produce.
  • To facilitate, coordinate and promote the marketing and trading activities of cooperative institutions in agriculture.
  • To act as the agency for canalization of export and import and promote interstate and international trade of agricultural commodities.
  • To act as warehouseman under the Warehousing Act and own and construct its own godowns and cold storages
  • To act as an insurance agent and to insure the purchase, sale, storage and distribution of agricultural, horticultural, forest and animal husbandry produce.
  • To undertake marketing research and dissemination of market intelligence
  • NAFED has been authorized to advance loans and act as guarantee to loans taken by its members or other cooperative societies.
