Recently, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched its new Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD). It is the agency’s first-ever laser communications system.
Significance: The LCRD will showcase the unique capabilities of optical communications. Using infrared lasers, LCRD will send data to Earth at 1.2 gigabits-per-second (Gbps).
