Untouchability Offences Act, 1955

The Untouchability Offences Act, 1955 was framed to prescribe punishment for preaching and practicing untouchability, as per Article 17 of the Constitution.

  • Initially the punishment prescribed was between 3 to 6 months with fine of Rs. 100.
  • It was amended in 1976 to make punishment more stringent and was renamed as Protection of Civil Rights Act.
