The Mystery of Coronal Heating
An international team of scientists has shed new light on coronal heating- one of the long-standing mysteries surrounding the Sun. The observations, published in the journal Science, have far reaching implications with respect to our understanding of the solar system.
Coronal Heating
- Distance from a source of heat should result in reduced temperature. But the Sun’s upper atmosphere (corona) is way hotter than its visible surface (photosphere). This anomaly is referred to as the puzzle of coronal heating.
- The temperature in the corona is more than a million degrees Celsius while that of the photosphere is about 5700 degrees ....
