Algerian President Steps Down

  • Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the 82-year old leader, resigned from his post on 2ndApril 2019 with immediate effect bringing an end to his 20 year rule.
  • Anti-Bouteflika protests broke out in late February 2019 when the long time president announced a plan to seek a fifth term in elections scheduled for April.
  • Abdelkader Bensalah, the head of the upper house of Algeria’s Parliament has become the interim leader for three months following which the elections would be held.
