Japan to Bring Back Soil Sample from Phobos

On 19th August, 2021, Japan’s space agency announced that it plans to bring soil samples back from the Mars region in hopes of finding clues to the planet’s origin and traces of possible life.

The Mission

  • The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will launch an explorer in 2024 that will land on the Martian moon Phobos, collect 10 grams of soil and bring it back to Earth in 2029.
