Meghalaya Prepares a Draft Water Policy
On July 12, the Meghalaya Cabinet approved a draft water policy to address water usages, issues of conservation and protection of water sources in the State.
About the Policy
- Meghalaya is the first state in the country to adopt a water policy.
- The primary aim if the policy is to recognise water as a common pool resource. The policy has specific objectives to fulfill domestic needs, minimum ecological needs, agriculture, hydropower generation, economic/industrial use/ fisheries before releasing the retained water for other purposes.
