Effects of Water Pollution on the Environment
- Eutrophication:Organic matter which reaches water bodies is decomposed by micro-organisms present in water. For this degradation, oxygen dissolved in water is consumed. Oxygen depletion (deoxygenating) helps in release of phosphates from bottom sediments and causes eutrophication.
- Presence of large amounts of nutrients in water results in algal bloom (excessive growth ofplanktonic algae. This leads to ageing of lakes. Algal blooms are caused by discharge of nutrients from estuaries, runoff from the land during the monsoon and upwelling in the seas.
- Phosphates: The increased use of fertilizers means that phosphates are more often being washed from the soil and into rivers and lakes. ....
