Significance
- Strategic: The Bay of Bengal has become increasingly strategic in the Indo-Pacific, owing to the competition between India and China. It is now poised to become a hotbed of geopolitical struggle among major powers, particularly in light of overarching efforts such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). BIMSTEC is critical for India's strategic goals of catering to the broader concept of the "Indo-Pacific" and an Indian Ocean community. The grouping puts India's strategic peripheries together (South, East and North).
