Tiger Translocation Initiative in Sahyadri Tiger Reserve
Recently, Maharashtra's forest department planned to translocate tigers from Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) to Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) to boost its tiger population.
- The Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) was established in January 2010 in the northern Western Ghats, encompassing Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Ratnagiri districts in western Maharashtra.
- STR comprises Chandoli National Park and Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and has struggled with a low tiger population due to poaching, poor prey base, and changing habitat.
Why translocation is needed?
- Despite being notified as a tiger reserve, STR has not seen an increase in breeding tigers, with evidence showing only seven to eight tigers ....
