India’s Genome-Edited Rice: Technology, Impact & the Issues Involved
On 4th May 2025, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) released two genome-edited rice varieties —1) DRR Rice 100 (also known as DRR Dhan 100 & Kamala) and 2) Pusa DST Rice 1, to improve productivity and resilience against drought and salinity.
Development and Approval
- DRR Rice 100 was developed by the ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research in Hyderabad using the Sambha Masuri (BPT-5204) variety.
- Pusa DST Rice 1 was created by ICAR-IARI in New Delhi using Cotton Dora Sannalu (MTU 1010).
- Both used SDN-1 (Site-Directed Nuclease-1) and SDN-2 (Site-Directed Nuclease-2) genome-editing, a technique approved in India for crops since it ....
