National Register Of Citizens
- Assam is updating its National Register of Citizens (NRC) as directed by Supreme Court in 2014.
- NRC is a list of all bona fide Indian citizens of Assam, the only state with such a document.
- However, recently Tripura has also demanded NRC to detect and deport illegal migrants from Bangladesh as migration by non-tribal groups has led to the decrease in Tripura’s tribal population from 63% in 1881 to 31% in 2011. There are 19 notified STs in Tripura, among whom the Tripuris are the largest group. Other important migrant groups are Reang and Jamatia, Bhil, Orang and Santhal.
