- Groundwater management is primarily the responsibility of State Governments as water is a State subject; the Central Government provides technical and financial assistance.
- Jal Shakti Abhiyan (JSA), launched in 2019, is a mission-mode programme focusing on water conservation; JSA 2024 targeted 151 water-stressed districts, with over 1.07 crore water conservation structures built in 4 years.
- National Aquifer Mapping (NAQUIM) by Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) covers ~25 lakh sq. km; district-wise aquifer maps and management plans have been shared with States for intervention.
