Chang’e 5 Finds First On-Site Evidence of Water on Moon

Recently, China’s Chang’e 5 lunar lander found the first-ever on-site evidence of water on the surface of the moon, lending new evidence to its dryness.

Background

  • Chang’e 5 lunar mission is the Chinese National Space Administration’s mission that sent a robotic spacecraft to the moon to collect samples and return them to the Earth for scientific study.
  • The Chang'e 5 spacecraft landed on one of the youngest mare basalts located at a mid-high latitude on the moon.
  • The space craft retrieved fragments of the youngest lunar rocks and returned them to the Earth in December, 2020.
