Eco-Sensitive Zone
Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZs) are ecologically significant and vulnerable areas around protected areas that are designated under the Environment Protection Act (EPA), 1986, to be protected from industrial pollution and unregulated development.
- They are notified by the Central Government in exercise of the powers granted by section 3 of the EPA, 1986.
- The aims of ESZs includes creating some kind of “Shock Absorber” for the Protected Areas (PAs); to act as a transition zone from areas requiring higher protection to those requiring lesser protection; and to regulate human activities, rather than prohibit, around PAs.
