Karnataka re-classifies the Definition of ‘Backward Classes’ for Reservation
On 30th March, 2023, the Karnataka Government made some significant changes in the norms for reservation in government jobs and education for backward classes and Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Karnataka.
Changes Made
- It decided to scrap the 4% backward classes quota for Muslims — they have been recognised as a backward class in Karnataka for more than 100 years.
- Previously, Muslims were given 4% reservation under Category 2B on grounds of being socially and educationally backward.
- The government divided this reservation equally among Vokkaligas and Veerashaiva-Lingayats, creating new categories of 2C and 2D, respectively. Earlier, both were under 3A and 3B respectively, ....
