Attlee’s Announcement (1947)
On 20th Feb. 1947, Attlee announced to transfer the power to Indians by June 1948.
- Attlee announced in parliament that the government’s definite intention was to transfer power into responsible Indian hands by a date not later than June 1948.
- This was followed by a near chaotic condition in the country as the League resorted to unabashed violence in Calcutta, Assam, Punjab and the North West Frontier Province (NWFP).
- Attlee also announced the appointment of Lord Mountbatten as viceroy in place of Wavell. He would be sent with a definite plan and full power to effect the transfer.
