Disaster Management (Amendment) Act, 2025: Integrating Climate Risks

India, highly disaster-prone with significant risks of earthquakes, floods, and cyclones, has updated its disaster governance. The 2025 amendment to the 2005 Act explicitly integrates climate adaptation and resilience into the framework, moving beyond the original provisions to address intensifying climate-induced risks.

Recent Developments

  • The Disaster Management (Amendment) Act, 2025, received Presidential assent and came into force on 29 March 2025.
  • In August 2025, a multi-state integrated mock drill, Exercise Suraksha Chakra, was conducted across Delhi-NCR, simulating an earthquake.
  • This exercise, organized by the NDMA in collaboration with other agencies, showcased the strengthened inter-agency coordination enabled by the new legislation.
