Protection of Endemic and Threatened Species
India, a megadiverse nation, hosts 7–8% of the world's recorded species, with high endemism in the Himalayas, Western Ghats, and Indo-Burma region. These unique species face severe threats from habitat loss, climate change, and human activity. Many are classified as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, underscoring the urgent need for conservation to protect ecological balance, cultural heritage, and local livelihoods.
Recent Developments
- In 2024, the MoEFCC launched a special recovery programme for 22 critically endangered species under the Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats scheme.
